Enrollment processes vary depending on course format, and some of MU's schools and colleges have varying enrollment procedures for their distance degree program students.
If you are not a current MU student, you must first be admitted as a nondegree student before you can enroll in individual courses. Read more about the nondegree admission process.

Distance course formats
Self-paced courses with 6-month max to finish
- Can be completed in as few as six weeks from the date of your first lesson submission or take up to six months… you choose your start date.
- Are open for enrollment any day of the year.
- Use Mizzou Online customized learning management system.
- Courses are accessible with mobile devices.
- Students work independently and receive personalized instructor feedback.
- Students generally have in-person proctored exams.
Self-paced courses with either 8-week sessions or 16-week sessions
- Start and end with the regular MU 8-week or 16-week academic session; you do not choose your start date.
- Use Mizzou Online's customized learning management system.
- Courses are accessible with mobile devices.
- Students work independently and receive personalized feedback.
- Have checkpoint dates within the semester/session for completion of classwork and exams.
- Students generally have in-person proctored exams.
Semester-based courses
- Begin and end on specified dates; and have weekly due dates for assignments, class work and quizzes throughout an 8- or 16-week class.
- Students have weekly interaction with the instructor and other class members via an asynchronous online discussion board.
- Some classes may have live online chat sessions.
- Generally use Canvas software for course delivery.
- Generally have online quizzes and exams; may have proctored exams in some cases.
Mizzou's online courses are developed and taught by their on-campus academic departments. As an online student, you complete the same amount of work and receive the same credit as you would in on-campus classes.
