About the Scholarship

The TIAA-CREF Hesburgh Endowment Fund enables MU’s General Education Program to award each spring four $1,000 academic achievement scholarships to one student from each of the four undergraduate classes. Students may apply for these awards or be nominated by a faculty member.  Nominations are now being accepted. Due date for completed packet is March 23rd by 5pm.  Please read application thoroughly to ensure all materials are received as specified.

Hesburgh winners will be honored April 15th in conjunction with the Honors College awards ceremony.

MU community,

I am pleased to invite application and nominations for the 2018 Hesburgh Awards for Student Academic Achievement, an award through the General Education Program. The TIAA-CREF Hesburgh Endowment Fund enables MU’s General Education Program to award four $1,000 academic achievement scholarships to one student from each of the four undergraduate classes every spring.  Students may apply for these awards or be nominated by a faculty member.  Nominations and application packets are due March 23rd by 5 p.m.

Eligibility guidelines and application/nomination requirements are described in detail under the “Requirements & Guidelines” section of this page. The essay should describe your most meaningful academic experience at MU. Does it involve research, teaching, both, or something else? Essays will be judged on substantive content, clarity, originality, effective order and presentation, skillful development of ideas, and correct grammar and punctuation.

Applications and supplemental submission forms for this scholarship are available online at generaleducation.adultdayconnection.com. The due date will be announced in the coming months. Winners will be determined by the Committee on Undergraduate Education and the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies & eLearning. Recipients will be notified via email and must confirm availability for special awards ceremony to be held on April 15th.

Requirements & Guidelines

Qualifications and documentation vary for each category of applicant/nominee. Undergraduate class is determined by the Registrar’s definition presented below:

  • 1-30 hours = Freshmen
  • 31-60 hours = Sophomore
  • 61-90 hours = Junior
  • 91+ hours = Senior

Hours completed include AP, dual-enrollment, CLEP, and transfer hours. Select your undergraduate class based on hours completed/credited as of the current academic year.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Minimum 3.0 Cumulative GPA
  • An “A” range grade in any 3-hour GEP course, or equivalent transfer course

Application/Nomination Guidelines

  • Current resume that includes a list of activities and honors (2 page maximum)
  • Student academic profile
  • Letter of nomination or support from 1 teacher
  • An essay of 2-3 pages (typed and double-spaced)

Sophomores – 31-60 hours

Eligibility Requirements

  • Minimum 3.2 Cumulative GPA
  • An “A” range grade in any two GEP courses, or equivalent transfer course(s)

  • Letter of nomination or support from 1 teacher
  • An essay of 2-3 pages (typed and double-spaced)

Juniors – 61-90 hours

  • An “A” range grade in any four GEP courses, or equivalent transfer course(s)

  • Letter of nomination or support from 1 teacher
  • An essay of 3-4 pages (typed and double-spaced)

All letters of nomination/support must be delivered to 128 Jesse Hall, either by campus mail or in-person by March 23rd at 5 p.m. Letters must be an original copy in an envelope signed and sealed by the author.

Winners will be determined by the Committee on Undergraduate Education and the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies & eLearning. Recipients will be notified via email and must confirm availability for special awards ceremony to be held on April 15th.
