Missouri Residency

Please join us on Monday, April 20 at 4 p.m. central time for a virtual town hall on residency. Our Registrar, Brenda Selman, will answer questions from families and students who have been working to establish Missouri residency during the 2019-20 academic year. Join the town hall live at https://missouri.zoom.us/j/92851616697. A full video of the town hall will be made available on this page after the event.
This page has been updated to reflect changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Please read carefully to learn how this may affect your application for residency. (Most recent update - 4/16/2020)
For all residency petitioners, the Office of the University Registrar will do the following:
- We will take into consideration the travel ban and the various state and regional directions to shelter in place.
- We will allow a reasonable lag time between the lifting of the travel restrictions and taking on a lease and finding employment in Missouri. We understand that those things take advance planning and preparation.
- We will respond to your application as quickly as possible once you submit it. And we will remain flexible as we process your application and consider impacts of the Covid 19 on your efforts to complete the residency requirements.
Fall 2020 petitioners (ONLY): If you meet some of the residency requirements prior to the start of the Fall 2020 semester, you may be granted a provisional residency status for 2020-21. To gain full residency-and continue to pay resident fees-you will need to complete all residency requirements the following year.
- For the remainder of the Spring 2020 semester, please stay wherever you will be safest and most comfortable. Absences from Missouri during the Spring 2020 semester will not be held against you.
- Explain on your application the reasons for any disruptions in your Missouri residency in the past 12 months (i.e. travel restrictions, campus closure, personal safety).
- Applicants need to earn $2,000 of taxable income in Missouri during the 12 months prior to the semester for which the student is applying for residency. Anything you've already earned during the qualifying period counts. Document in your application any extenuating circumstances that you believe should be considered.
- You must have been enrolled at Mizzou for the entire 2019-2020 academic year to be eligible for residency.
- Continue to document what steps you have taken to achieve resident status.
- Complete the residency application and submit it between August 1 and October 1 of this year (these dates have been updated).

As a public, land-grant institution, the University of Missouri offers reduced tuition and fees to Missouri residents. To be considered a Missouri resident and gain in-state tuition benefits, you must live and work in Missouri for 12 consecutive months immediately prior to the semester you plan to apply for residency.
To apply for in-state status, you must complete a Petition for Missouri Resident Status and submit it along with copies of all the required documentation. All of the residency requirements must be met and the application process must be followed correctly, including meeting the deadlines, for your petition to be approved.
If you receive financial aid or scholarships, contact The Office of Student Financial Aid to determine how changing your residency status might affect your award.
